Rice,
wheat, and maize are the world’s three leading food crops; together they supply
over 40% of all calories consumed by the entire human population. Of these
three major crops, rice is the most widely consumed food crop for people
in the developing world. It has been estimated that over half the world’s
population subsists wholly or partially on rice.
The safety and integrity of rice production
worldwide faces substantial challenges. Fraud in the rice supply has been
well known for some time but the types of fraud and its scale appears to be
increasing dramatically. Reports of counterfeiting, ‘toxic rice’ and ‘plastic
rice’ are now frequently reported in the media around the world. This has
served to fuel substantial fears in many that what they and their children are
eating is not safe.
So how much truth is in these reports and what can
be done to detect rice fraud at a global level? The webinar will outline some
of the facts & myths about rice fraud and present some of the very latest
ways we can fingerprint rice to help stop criminals getting away with cheating
the global citizen.
